Hugo von Hofmannsthal was a German author, known as perhaps the most important Austrian writer of his era. Born in Vienna to prosperous Jewish parents, he was educated by private tutors and studied law and philology at the University of Vienna. He showed a precocious gift for poetry, and became equally prolific writing drama, fiction, and essays.
